Born on 17 July 1917 in Lima, Ohio, Phyllis Ada Diller (née Driver) was an American actress and comic. An eccentric in character and appearance, she will be remembered for her quickly-delivered one-liners and self-deprecating jokes, wild hair, distinctive cackle, cigarette holder, and exotic dress sense.

In 1955, Diller made her television debut as a contestant on Groucho Marx’s game show You Bet Your Life . At the time, she was working as a copywriter, but her appearance on the show prompted an offer to do a comedy stint at The Purple Onion Comedy Club in San Francisco. This well-received act brought other offers, and she went on to be a successful stand-up comic. In addition to this, she co-starred in several films with Bob Hope and accompanied him to Vietnam for his USO Christmas show in 1966, took part in various TV shows, starred in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway, and recorded voice-overs for animated films. In 1992, she received the American Comedy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Married twice before living with her partner, Robert P. Hastings, until his death in 1996, Phyllis’s boorish husband mentioned in many of her jokes as ‘Fang’ was actually fictional. Her stand-up routine often included digs at Fang’s fat mother, as well as many jokes about her own looks and lack of culinary skill, but this was just a stage persona.

A keen musician, Diller was a talented concert pianist, performing throughout America with over a hundred symphony orchestras. She was also a painter and a best-selling author, publishing several books including Phylli
