PREFACE
This book is an exploration of the principles, secrets, laws, or rules by which a marriage works. Most books on marriage are based on counseling experience, but this book gives you more than experience. It gives you principles, secrets, and handles for a successful, happy marriage. Experience tells you what works, but principles tell you why it works. When principles are understood, many things tend to take care of themselves.
In this book, we will share with you ten secrets – or principles – that will make your marriage work, be happy, and be successful. The principles set forth in this book have not only met the test in our own marriage, but in the marriage experience of others. Like Paul said, Janet and I are essentially “Christ’s servants who distribute God’s blessings by explaining God’s secrets” (1 Corinthians 4:1, TLB). If you refuse to give heed to God's plan for your life, which is designed for your benefit, you will reap what you sow. But don't blame God if things fall apart in your marriage. If you pay close attention to His Word and obey it, you are guaranteed a successful marriage. Therefore, as you discover the secrets, believe in them and personalize them. The degree to which you believe in them and apply them determines the degree of your marriage success.
Your willingness to accept God's Word and change your attitudes and actions will dictate the effect of this book on your life. The effort you put into applying the principles presented in this book will lead to rewarding results in your life and home.
This book is meant to stimulate your thinking. The principles discussed serve as windows through which you look and see your role as a husband or a wife. They will transform your personal life and consequently your marriage. They will also help you develop a lasting and intimate marital relationship. There are places in the book where we will address you as an individual because there are certain things each individual must do to make one's marriage work. At other places, we will address you as a married couple because certain things must be done jointly to ensure success.
The main objective of this second edition remains the same as in the first edition: present the ten secrets of successful marriages in a manner that is clearer and more interesting. In addition, we also aim at updating the book and reducing the number of pages. Each chapter is written such that it can easily be used for teaching.
We owe special thanks to Kehinde Sadiku who drew some of the figures and taught us how to covert the first edition into Word document.
