Foreword to the Revised Edition
I love this book!
I think it is unique in the homiletical literature as a kind of “scriptural theology of preaching” (as Greg describes it) – and also as spiritual theology. I strongly recommend it to pastors worldwide, both for individual devotions and as a resource to be used wherever pastors gather, whether in fraternals in the West or in Langham preaching clubs in the Majority World. Reading, discussing and praying through one of these meditations at the start of each meeting will add so much to the time together.
Valuable as the first edition of this book was, the second has even more to offer in terms of Scripture-saturated thinking and praying. Each meditation is now anchored in a specific passage of Scripture, which is cited at the start of the text, and each meditation is now followed by a sample prayer that will no doubt prompt further prayers and soul-searching on the part of all who read. The scriptural passages concerned are now all cited in an index of references, should you wish to return to or preach on a particular passage.
Eight entirely new meditations have been added, several of which are devoted to the important issue of what John Stott called “double listening” – that is, listening to both God’s word and the world in which we proclaim it.
May meditating on this book bless you as a preacher proclaiming the Living Word to the world through the spoken word on the basis of the written word, in dependence upon the inspiring, illuminating, authenticating, and anointing work of the Spirit of God who leads people to Jesus.

Foreword to the First Edition
In many parts of the world, pastors and lay preachers proclaim God’s word without the help of resources that Christians in the West tend to take for granted. These pastors faithfully serve their congregations by preaching the Bible week by week, but often with relatively little training, very few books, and only limited support.
Greg Scharf, although teaching in a resource-rich environment in the USA, has seen these pastors and lay preachers at work as he has travelled on behalf of Langham Preaching to Africa, Asia and Europe. He knows something of the challenge they face in teaching the Bible with little else to hand. That is why his book is so timely. Yet it is not simply for those with limited resources; it is for all preachers in all cultures.
In a series of accessible and thought-provoking meditations, Dr Scharf helps us see that God has provided what we need for the task of preaching. He introduces us to the reciprocal relationships between preacher, God, the Scriptures and our listeners, and demonstrates how the dynamics of these relationships can transform our preaching. Although homiletical techniques have their place, what really matters for preachers is our relationship with the God who spoke his word in Scripture – and through that word still speaks to his people – along with our relationship with our fellow believers in the church.
If we take each of these meditations to heart, our preaching will be transformed as we trust God’s word, depend on God’s Spirit, proclaim God’s Son, and build up God’s people. Then, like Martin Luther, we will be able to say: “I just threw the Bible into the congregation and the word did the work.”
I warmly commend this boo
