Description

This is a book about the practice of a healing ministry in a faith community. The concept of parish nursing is a burgeoning field in nursing practice today and this book offers practical guidelines, tips, and wonderful stories of parish nursing ministry.

This book is intended for faith communities, nurses, nursing instructors, faith community leaders, physicians in family practice, and anyone interested in the field of parish nursing. There is useful information for everyone.

Barbara's role evolved from her ongoing recognition of changing health care needs. At the same time as the Reverend Granger Westberg began a similar movement in the United States, and before his work was known in Canada, Barbara envisioned how a nurse could promote health and healing in the congregation and the community. As a respected member of a committed, caring ministry team, she developed a practice that included education, advocacy, empowerment, emotional and spiritual support, and connection with community services.

Emerging out of her 15 years of experience, this book promotes excellent, practical, "how to" aspects of parish nursing. It is a uniquely Canadian, uniquely nursing, experiential perspective on parish nursing, and a must for anyone interested in this field.

Praise for Walking Alongside: The Essence Of Parish Nursing
“After working with Barb for many years on the Pastoral Care Team of our Church, I am not at all surprised by the thoroughness, competence, comprehensiveness, and overall excellence of her written work. As a parish nurse, Barb brings a unique set of skills to our team. In short, Barb makes a real difference in the kind and quality of care that is offered to our members and to the wider community. I am convinced that her book will make a significant difference as well.
I wholeheartedly commend this book to parish nurses, clergy and faith communities alike as they seek to provide the best possible care for their members.”
—The Rev. Don Downer
Associate Pastor
Holy Trinity Church, Thornhill
“Walking Alongside reflects Barbara’s unwavering commitment to parish nursing. As a pioneer in the field, she has a vast amount of experience to share. Speaking from her personal experiences is what makes this book such a treasure for those people trying to get their head around the concept of parish nursing. The mixture of heartfelt writing and practical tips makes this book a must for people who hope to become parish nurses.”

—Glennis Harris RN
Parish Nurse
“My exposure to parish nurse work over the past 15 years has been very positive and definitely beneficial in making health care decisions for extremely complex situations in a timely, professional manner. I think the ‘to do list’ provides the meat of the book and would be useful for the practitioner. The quotes provide a spiritual backdrop.”
—Joe Marshall
Family Physician
Thornhill, ON
“Barbara is a pioneer of parish nursing, and was practicing in Canada when Granger Westberg formalized the concept in the late 1980’s. She is therefore, qualified to write this practical tool for parish nurses. As well as telling her inspiring personal story she shares valuable advice. These are evidenced based nursing interventions, especially helpful to beginning parish nurses.
This book is a needed addition to the growing collection of parish nursing resources. It is a ‘church-tested’ recipe for a successful parish nursing ministry.”
—Gloria Wiebe RN

Foreword
It is a great pleasure to commend this book to you. Over the past thirteen years I worked with Barbara Caiger as one of the Anglican ministers in pastoral ministry. Her journey of discovery of the richness of this ministry was mine also. Repeatedly we saw the benefits of this pastoral team for individual parishioners, their families and the entire parish, with the parish nurse as an integral and essential component. Staff benefitted from the care and support of the parish nurse – Barb’s teddy bears often had staff visitors as well as the parishioners – including me! Vulnerable seniors without extended family had an advocate and were well supported in their needs. Educational events brought community members into the church and opened our doors to their needs.
It was a tremendous privilege to journey with Barbara in pioneering this ministry in our community. She searched for and found or developed the resources and networks she needed and established the credibility of the ministry to such an extent that local health care providers – doctors, nurses, community agencies – breathed a sigh of relief when they knew she was part of the whole team of care.
The chapters that follow are distilled from the experiences of Barb’s ministry, tested and proven in the hurly-burly of a large, active suburban church. I pray that they will be a catalyst for others to discover the rich benefits of parish nursing ministry. As a parish priest my personal desire is to always have a parish nurse on the ministry team!
May God richly bless you as we were blessed in discovering parish nursing as a vehicle for sharing the love and healing compassion of Christ!
The Rev. Canon Dr. Linda Nicholls

To my husband and best friend, Chuck, who encouraged me to follow my dream.

Preface
I am a part of all that I have touched
and all that has touched me.
Thomas Wolfe
We are at a time in history where our health care systems are challenged, medical staffing is reduced, and technology is creating a distance between practitioners and patients. How can we provide health care that attends to the physical needs of people, while addressing their emotional and spiritual dimensions as well? How much longer can our health care system carry on with the interminable wait lists for critical interventions? How do consumers learn to take more responsibility for their own health care? The recent concerns about our health care systems urge us to examine ways for faith communities to reclaim the ministry of healing and wholeness.
Scope of This Book
This is a book about promoting healing and wholeness in faith communities. As a parish nurse with fifteen years experience, I have learned some profound lessons about the human condition. I share these lessons through stories, illustrations, and personal experiences. I recognize that each faith community, with its own unique identity, will exhibit different manifesta
