#1

The rise in developmental delays and sensory issues in children is a growing trend. It is becoming more and more common for children to need occupational therapy services to treat these issues.

#2

The problems that children face today are largely due to the fact that they are not getting enough outdoor activity. This book will help you provide your child with the ideal settings for active free play outdoors.

#3

The number of children receiving occupational therapy services has increased over the last few years. The doctors refer these kids to occupational therapy when there is a problem with attention, balance, strength, coordination, or sensory processing.

#4

There has been a rise in the number of children being diagnosed with attention issues and ADHD. Children are not paying attention today, and this is largely due to their inability to sit still and concentrate.

#5

The woods at TimberNook were alive with play and laughter. It was magical, until an eight-year-old boy let go of the rope swing in midair and fell to the ground, which knocked the wind out of him. He was panicking, but I calmly but quickly rushed to him and helped him breathe.

#6

Children’s decreasing core strength should be of particular concern. In 2012, I tested students at a local elementary school on their ability to hold a superman position, supine flexion, and the plank position when facing the ground. The majority of the children could not meet the baselines taken from the average core strength of children in the early 1980s.

#7

With decreased muscle strength and lots of sitting, children develop poor posture. This can lead to problems with alignment, as well as headaches and pain.

#8

A combination of poor core strength and sedentary behavior can lead to decreased stamina for any type of active play. Children who are hyperactive or fidgety in class often complain of leg pain or being tired when they finally get to be physically active.

#9

The number of fractures in children has increased in recent years. For example, according to a 2010 study in Sweden, the incidence of fractures in children increased by 13 percent between 1998 and 2007. The most common fracture site was the distal forearm, or the region closest to the hand.

#10

The number of kids falling and getting injured during physical education class has risen dramatically in the past decade. What is contributing to this rise. What is making today’s kids clumsier than kids of a generation ago.

#11

The main reason children’s colds seem to last forever is because their immune systems are becoming weaker and weaker. They are more prone to colds, illnesses, and allergies.

#12

Aggression during recess has become such an issue that schools are starting to ban tag, a classic game that children have always enjoyed. It seems that children are becoming more aggressive.

#13

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is on the rise. It is more common in children today than it was in the 1970s. With the rise in developmental disabilities, we are seeing more children with visual problems.

#14

The increase in worries and fears in children is a sign of the increasing anxiety in adults. Children are having trouble controlling their emotions, and worries and fears are becoming a barrier to their simple enjoyment of childhood.

#15

The rise in mood swings among children is a concern for parents. The teachers I spoke with said that kids today seem to have more trouble controlling their emotions than children did thirty years ago.

#16

The brains of children are different than they were twenty years ago, and there are environmental factors at play. How can we prevent some of the symptoms of anxiety from occurring in the first place.

#17

The amount of time children spend in unstructured play has decreased by 50 percent since the 1980s, and they are spending more time than ever before in front of electronic screens. This is why they have trouble playing independently and creatively.

#18

The truth is that today’s children are not developing as well as past generations. They are having trouble paying attention in school, experiencing difficulty controlling emotions, and having trouble safely navigating their environment.
