Description

Raises awareness of the dark, often hidden and unpleasant, side of the tourism industry

This book explores the roles that control, abuse, bullying and family violence can play within the tourism system. While it is generally understood that such behaviours are significant issues in society, the correlation between these types of behaviour and tourism has not been assessed in scholarly circles. The volume sets out to explain each of these behaviours within tourism industries using autoethnography as its method. This book reveals the heightened risk of family violence during family events, sporting events and in the tourism system, and explains that risks continue and can even increase after separating from a perpetrator of family violence. This is an important and under-researched area in the tourism and events literature and will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in these fields, as well as family violence, social work, health and law.

I dedicate this book to my four children: James John Zentveld, Chantelle Rose Zentveld, Jonathan Alexander Zentveld and Sebastian Alexander Zentveld, for all their love, support, encouragement and inspiration.
I also dedicate this book to my late father, John Zentveld. While he passed away before this book began, his role model to me as a father and to my children as a positive male role model had been exceptionally helpful. While he was an older European (Dutch) man, not once did I feel inferior in his eyes because of my gender. He was calm, positive no matter what went wrong, generous to the community, and remains a constant reminder of what a good father can be.
Many years ago my late father wrote:

I was almost eight years old that day in May 1940. They sang as they marched down our road, thundering jackboots the only accompaniment. Behind the curtains we wept. The Germans had arrived in Holland sentencing us to five years of hunger, fear, and anger. Searchlights replaced stars, nighttime lullabies the drone of bombers heading East. Returning later the drone threatened by the staccato screaming sounds of fiery trailed broken planes.
Peace at last. I turn thirteen. Hardship without hope replaces victory’s euphoria. A new life beckons in Australia. Reborn aged twenty in a land of freedom, hope and love.
They took our dignity, our possessions, our freedom but they couldn’t take our souls.
