Description

Learn how to really listen to—and cultivate—your body’s health without a special budget or training, letting you enter and maintain a higher cognitive state regularly and do your life’s best work.

In our age of chaos, inattention, truthiness and failed leadership, it’s time for all of us to step out of the shadows and become our own Commander in Chief. Any one of us can use timeless wisdom and focus to exercise control over ourselves and our future, as long as we don’t seek magic pills or quick fixes.

In this powerful book, Yuri Kruman combines frontline war stories with humorous misadventures to explore the four essential conversations we should all be having to build our best possible life. This comprehensive playbook will help you navigate body (health, nutrition and fitness), mind (mental models and life skills), dealing with others and conversing with G-d/the Universe.

Unflinching with candor yet relentlessly actionable, this optimistic book is a profound field guide for how to live and future-proof an enriching and purposeful life.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The list of people to hold accountable for the madness that became this book is long and extensive. I took names.
Ok, only kidding. Those that have taught me about life, showed me the ropes and the joys, pushed me to go far beyond what I thought possible for myself, taught me how NOT to behave through their behavior, mentors from afar and teachers from near, spiritual and lay leaders, people that are beacons of integrity and have taught me by example how to be a man, a son, a father, husband, friend and brother, plus my dear friends and supporters who have been with me since the beginning, are perhaps too numerous to name here. You truly know who you are, because I ve almost certainly told you to your face. :)
That said, here goes.
Mom - you re my greatest inspiration and champion for the last 38 years, my fountainhead of knowledge, model of integrity and kindness and decency. If there was ever a role model in my life, it s you. Even if we re not colleagues, I truly hope I ve made you proud with what I do how I live my life. This book is a testament to you and your unparalleled mothering and teaching skills. You are my shining light and may untold thousands of people continue to benefit from your work and kindness to 120.
Jennifer, my wife - you are the fire in my veins, Woman. How much I ve learned from you and our life together over the last 10+ years together cannot possibly be overstated (here s to learning more together until 120). You are our greatest energy source, our tzadeket , our Queen Lioness, our brilliance and beauty and humor. I love you more than words can say. If marrying well is the most important decision in life, then I ve won the lottery for life.
Leora, Livia and Isaac, our kiddos - well, kids, you sure didn t make writing this easy, but you were the biggest reason why I had to write this, and did. This is not nearly the only thing I want to leave for you and your children and grandchildren. But it may just be the most important. Read this, study this, grow up healthy and big and smart and kind and work hard to become your best selves. I truly cannot wish you more than maximal self-actualization and the health and energy and time to carry out your respective life missions. Love you and G-d bless you with every possible revealed blessing. You re my everything, even if my love for writing may make you think otherwise. Everything I do is for you.
My dear friends who ve been with me since the beginning (and there have been many, you know who you are) - Ilya S. and Dave A. (my two other musketeers), Sasha and Masha and Ilya and Natalia, Mehyar (you ll always be my first, boo), Ariel, Audra, Dominique, Emile, Sadhana. You guys are my rocks and I m lucky to have each of you in my life. Whether it s hanging out all together with our kids, having late-night conversations at the Shabbat table, late-night calls on drives to Whole Foods and Trader Joe s or just shooting the breeze over burgers and beers, you are the definition of fortune in life.
My Grandfather Isaak Kruman (Of Blessed Memory) and Grandmother Faina Simkhovich (Of Blessed Memory) - you were my first model of what it s like to truly love and care for each other as man and wife, serve your family and community with selflessness, endure difficulty with humor and without complaint. How Dedushka Isaak doted on Babushka Fania and spent every ounce of energy until the end, getting her everything she needed, was how I always wanted to be. Babushka Fania s wonderful smile, hiding behind it beauty and kindness and fire, still illuminates my life as if it s with me.
Other family, close and distant relatives - y all know who you are. Those that treat me well and always have, G-d bless you, you re awesome human beings. Those that treat me like garbage, G-d bless you equally. Each of you has taught me more than you know, for both good and bad. And for that, I m truly and sincerely grateful.
Rabbi Uriel Smith (Of Blessed Memory) - your selfless embrace of a young kid looking for answers about life and himself will always be remembered. You took me into your home and taught me complex math and physics and Talmud, with everything in between. I may not remember nearly everything, but what I did learn that has served me incredibly well is your remarkable connections between disciplines and concepts and people. I am sad that I didn t get to share this book with you before your passing, but I know you ll see it from Above.
My teachers in middle and high school - chief among them, Mrs. Slone for teaching me Greek and Latin roots (my G-d, how useful those have been!), Mrs. Sims for teaching me Southern Fried etiquette, Mrs. Christensen for opening up my eyes to the world of art history and Mr. Pope for humoring my shtick (hammer and sickle as a gift, imagine).
My college professors - you opened my eyes to the magnitude of the wonders of the universe and of humanity, and for that, I will always be grateful. Tops among you are Drs. Tom Schoenemann and Janet Monge, Tony Esposito and the remarkable Katalin Karik (who researched and developed the mRNA vaccine for Moderna).
My coaches and mentors in online business - Mike Dillard, Richie Norton, Kelly Meerbott, Kimanzi Constable, and Jared Kleinert (you are truly wise well beyond your years, my friend).
My clients - without you, I would never have learned so much about myself or my capabilities, at your kind expense ;) Kidding, but it s also true.
My bosses - most of you were kind enough to hire me (in some cases, I was kind enough to take the job, mistakenly), but literally none of you took the time to develop me. A few of you let me go far too soon, without giving me a real chance to bloom. It was a backhand blessing, but the tough love also forced me to learn how to do my own personal and professional development, plus never to trust people with incentives different from mine before signed contracts are in force. And perhaps the most important lesson I got from you is how NOT to treat people you hire, or in general. The rest, as they say, is history. Thanks for the lesson!
Rabbi Ari and Chaya Kirschenbaum - you are not just our community leaders and two of the most generous, kind and giving people I have ever met. You and your entire extended family have made us feel like a part of you. We are truly blessed to learn from you, entrust our children to your care and learning, plus to be part of the incredible community you ve built. You are our pillars and we love you guys.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (Of Blessed Memory) - you are a figure almost larger than life and though you ve been gone from the physical world for almost 30 years, your impact on tens of millions of people (Jews and non-Jews) continues growing. I am continually in awe of your teachings, the incredibly community you built and the humanity, selflessness and self-sacrifice and simple good works that are your legacy. To your work, my wife and I, among tens of thousands of others, owe our meeting and marriage, our children s early education and untold small and big kindnesses and indeed, miracles from prayer. There is no way to fully capture how much you have done for us despite us never even having met you. May the unparalleled impact of your work in spreading light to the world continue to multiply ad bli dai .
Last, but very far from least, I want to thank:
Amanda Rooker, my developmental editor and thinking partner - without you, there would be a giant encyclopedia with little connecting the pieces other than imagination. Thank you so much for helping me to make this into a worthy book! Your guidance has been paramount.
Ben Rooker, my illustrator - small details matter, a great deal. Thanks for helping me take this book to the end and make it into a thoughtful, comprehensive resource.
Rohit Bhargava and the rest of the Think Twice Publishing Team - thanks for taking a chance on me and helping me bring this book to life!
Beyond all else, I want to thank the Almighty for giving me the inspiration, life experiences, learnings and insights to help formulate and write this book, plus for putting in my path so many amazing, kind and generous people, along with the all the people who treated me badly. There is a rhyme and reason for everything in life and I am truly humbled to be entrusted with this message and philosophy.
May this book serve Your purpose
