COVID-19
We have re-checked every business in this book before publication to ensure that it is still open after the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 will continue to be felt long after the outbreak has been contained, and many businesses, services and events referenced in this guide may experience ongoing restrictions. Some businesses may be temporarily closed, have changed their opening hours and services, or require bookings; some unfortunately could have closed permanently. We suggest you check with venues before visiting for the latest information.
Welcome to Georgia & the Carolinas

Some of my fondest childhood memories involve trips to this enchanting swath of the South – shelling on Hunting Island, canoeing through cypress swamps in Congaree National Park and wide-eyed bear encounters in the Great Smoky Mountains. Years later, I find these wondrous settings have lost none of their magic. Of course nature is only one – admittedly significant – draw to this trio of states. There’s also the great food scene (fresh-off-the-boat seafood in Charleston, multiethnic food markets in Atlanta), arts-loving neighborhoods, disarming southern charm, and those astonishing discoveries (pirate ghosts on Ocracoke, wild horses on Cumberland) that make for unforgettable days of travel.

1 URBAN ALLURE
No matter when you travel, you’re sure to find something simmering in the South’s most dynamic cities. Cutting-edge art exhibitions, chef-owned farm-to-table restaurants and creative cocktail dens are just a few reasons to chart your course for the boulevards and back lanes of arts-loving neighborhoods in Georgia and the Carolinas. New green spaces and revitalized districts make it well worth your while even if you’ve been before.

Atlanta
Georgia’s culturally rich and multifaceted capital illustrates the dual nature of today’s South: it’s a bastion of African American pride, a hip-hop hotbed, a film and tech industry upstart and LGBTIQ+ epicenter that’s also steeped in Old South wealth and Fortune 500 investment.

The Triangle
Made up of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina’s ‘Triangle’ contains three of America’s most gorgeous university campuses: Duke (pictured), the University of North Carolina and NC State. It’s also a buzzing culture capital with a thriving entertainment and music scene.

Savannah
Georgia’s oldest city boasts eye-catching architecture and thriving arts – plus an iconoclastic streak a mile long. People-watch in the live-oak-shaded squares or rifle through treasure-filled antiques shops, then fill your belly with Southern seafood dishes straight from the sea.

2 INTO THE WOODS
It’s easy to reconnect with nature along the forested slopes of the Appalachian mountains. Fern-lined trails wind past gurgling streams and old-growth poplars up to lofty lookouts with a panoramic sweep of wilderness-covered horizon. Hiking and camping immerse you in the region’s natural wonders, though you can also plot scenic drives, picnic by thundering waterfalls or just bunk for the night in a cabin, with wildlife watching right outside your door.

Great Smoky Mountains
Don’t miss out on the eastern USA’s most magnificent park, with its myriad cascades and jaw-dropping viewpoints, such as Clingmans Dome (pictured). Take a stunning scenic drive, soak in frontier history at Cades Cove or hike through miles of misty mountain trails while on the lookout for deer, birds and even black bears.

Amicalola Falls State Park
Georgia’s highest waterfall (pictured) is also a link to the southern end of the legendary Appalachian Trail, which continues for more than nearly 2000 miles all the way to Maine. Come in the spring for mountain laurel, dogwood and azaleas, or in the fall for blazing autumn colors.

Providence Canyon
Explore Georgia’s ‘Little Grand Canyon’ and wander the multihued gullies as deep as 150ft (pictured). From the rim, you’ll have views over exquisite rock formations, some of which were formed over 60 million years ago.

3 SOUTHERN CHARM
The best places to discover the soul of the South are in the small towns found all across Georgia and the Carolinas. In diverse communities, you’ll hear the region’s colorful accents, and often be left speechless at the utter politeness that locals sprinkle liberally in their interactions. Small-town pride runs deep, and you needn’t limit your travels to the city to discover one-of-a-kind museums, creative craft-makers and innovative eateries.

Beaufort
It’s easy to lose yourself in this small, well-preserved Southern town that’s fit for the silver screen. The charming streets are lined with gorgeous antebellum homes, restored 18th-century mansions and Spanish-moss-covered magnolias, and the riverfront brims with colorful cafes and shops.

Cuthbert House Inn , Beaufort | DEBORAH MCCAGUE/SHUTTERSTOCK ©

Greenville
Stroll the Liberty Bridge over the cascades of Falls Park in Greenville (pictured), and it’s hard not to feel a crackle of good energy. The picturesque downtown and mountainous back-yard are big draws, as is Greenville’s celebrated local dining and drinking scene.

KEVIN RUCK/SHUTTERSTOCK ©

Asheville
Perhaps North Carolina’s prettiest mountain town, Asheville (pictured) charms with its quaint and quirky 1930s downtown, established craft beer culture and easy access to some of the state’s best outdoor adventures. The Biltmore Estate is a key draw with house tours, wine tasting and strolls around acres of manicured grounds.

4 IDYLLIC ISLANDS
Amid hundreds of miles of captivating shorelines, you’ll find deserted islands, enchanting coastal towns and some of America’s loveliest beaches, with a fair mix of historical attractions (including one well-known spot where two famous brothers first took flight). Wherever you roam, it’s hard not to feel like you’ve left the modern world behind as you head out to a place where nature rules supreme in a salt-tinged realm of sea, sand and sky.

Cumberland Island
This thoroughly wild barrier island off the coast of Georgia (pictured) harbors more than 36,000 acres of marshland, mud flats and tidal creeks, plus dune-swept beaches. You can pitch a tent at a forest campsite or sleep in luxury at the Greyfield Inn.

IOFOTO/SHUTTERSTOCK ©

Outer Banks
On North Carolina’s underdeveloped shoreline (pictured), you can spy Spanish mustangs thundering through the surf on Corolla, explore the history of flight at Kitty Hawk, and look for the ghost of Blackbeard who met his bitter end on isolated Ocracoke Island.

DAVID LOUIS ECONOPOULY/SHUTTERSTOCK ©

Hilton Head Island ()
Some call Hilton Head (pictured) the Hamptons of the South, with its elegant waterfront homes, golf courses and high-end eateries. But it is also an eco-destination, where you can bike through woodl
