AUTHOR’S INTRODUCTION
Hello everyone, I’m Charles Ball age 56 and I’m from northeast Ohio, USA. After kicking the idea around for a couple of years now, I finally told myself it’s time to do this.
I’ve worked extremely hard gathering stories from riders all over the country about their close call incidents and even some accidents as well.
I have personally been riding motorcycles for about 35 years and fortunately I’ve been lucky; but I have seen some pretty awful accidents also. If you’re just starting out or been riding a long time, reading this book will put added safety knowledge in your minds and learn about other precautions you should know and what to watch out for, all while saving lives.

CLOSE CALL EXPERIENCES
I’ve been almost rear-ended several times by people who were always in a hurry, it’s a scary experience for sure.
Me and a car were making a left onto a two-lane street. They were in such a hurry that they went around my bike and clipped me. As a result, I went down and they kept going, never giving me a second thought.
It was silly on my part, but while riding on a gravel road in the country, I decided to light a cigarette with no hands on the handlebars, I suddenly went down. I wasn’t hurt, but it certainly woke me up.
On a four-lane state route, someone decided to pull a U-turn from the shoulder to the lanes in the opposite direction, luckily, I was paying attention or this story would have ended differently.
Thought it was a clever idea to adjust my clutch going down the road. The next thing I know, I went from sitting on the bike to sitting on the pavement watching the bike slide on by, think first everyone.
Was at an intersection; the light turns green and there’s a man waiting to get out of a gas station parking lot; the car in front of me waves him out. He crosses over in front of my bike causing me to slam on my brakes missing him by mere inches. He looked at me unapologetically like I was at fault, another motorist who didn’t think about bikers.
Was riding down the street when and a wild turkey got ran over by the car in front of me and was somehow flung at me! I had to swerve big time but I somehow managed to keep control.
Was in the right lane of a two way back road when a car comes over headed toward me directly in my lane!! I had maybe 3 feet of space to work with, I swerved and managed to keep control. The driver was looking at their phone and didn’t even realize they just missed a biker.
On my 750-shadow headed to Key West, I looked down at my odometer and gas gauge, looked up and an SUV was stopped in front of me. I swerved left and could feel my right shoulder brush the left corner of the SUV. That was in 1998 and I’m still dumbfounded till this day.
I just have continuous problems with deer in my area
I have hit a deer, a large turkey, dodged several other deer, cars, and a black bear! Keep your eyes open for anything riders.
I hit a deer going about 60 MPH was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. After hours of surgery, I survived and at the age of 71 I’m still riding, of course.
Everyday seems like someone somewhere doesn’t see me, they try and run me off the road, out of my lane, cut me off or pull in front of me, it’s crazy.
Deer have a hit out on me
I recommend a windshield, it’s no fun having a bat crawling up the front of you while riding down the road.
As your author I will throw a story in here and there. I was coming home from work as I break off one route onto another 5-lane freeway. Before getting off my exit I see a biker in the center lane. The biker noticed I was watching for them before I went ahead to the far-right lane for exiting. Even as riders we have responsibilities also as car drivers to watch for bikers.
People left of center on rural routes, country roads and deer are my worst problems.
Passing a semi and his trailer tire blew out next to me. I escaped injury but it sure was a scary feeling.
Stopped to make a left when a vehicle screeched to a halt behind us went around to pass so abruptly that they just missed clipping my highway bars.
From your author: one of my favorite sayings of all time is EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.
There are lots of wild turkeys in my area and they can be scary; I almost got taken out by a large one.
I clipped an owl coming off a bridge railing, luckily, I was going kind of slow as it was early morning and I was headed to work.
While on a bike run, 3 rd in line, a groundhog ran out and I hit it almost going down but I managed to keep control.
While leaning making a left turn at an intersection, I noticed a lot of broken glass in my path. A car behind me in a hurry to pass barely missed hitting my hip with their bumper.
One morning I hit a groundhog on my new bike, I kept control but almost went down, the experience was scary for sure.
About 10 p.m. a deer jumped out, I was on a hill with a curve, I hit the grass on the hillside and slid. the bike hit gravel and stood back up, my feet slammed down and I sat there a few minutes. YES, a change of underwear was needed.
