This one-of-a-kind book includes recognized pet-lovers, such as Betty White, Doris Day, John Steinbeck, Zane Grey and Charles Schulz to memorable pets and their people. Each story and adventure show the virtues of soulmates with paws.

* The global pandemic and climate change resulted in an upsurge of animal adoptions… people were seeking the emotional support and affection that a companion animal can bring.
* Whether it’s ESP, superior senses, feline intuition, or a change in routine, your pet may sense danger, and give you a warning to keep you out of harm’s way!
* Why are homeless pets and their people a timeless phenomenon?
* How exactly do wayward cats and dogs find their way home?

Written from the perspective of a veteran animal writer, gifted storyteller author Cal Orey, shares the best of her nationally published magazine articles. This fascinating gift book dishes out the power of love and loyalty between companion animals and humanity.

Cal Orey combines well-researched expertise, dynamic humor, and honoring the angelic nature of animals by showing their power to heal hearts and minds with unconditional love."

FOREWORD
INCREDIBLE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT OF PETS
Soulmates with Paws is a book about the emotional bonds that people form with their pet dog or cat. Th e global pandemic and lockdowns of 2020 resulted in an upsurge of animal adoptions from shelters, suggesting that people were now, even more frequently, seeking the emotional support and affection that a companion animal can bring.
There is also scientific evidence which emphasizes the strength of our feelings for our pets. I encountered this while doing some research which I published in The British Medical Journal . During the course of a larger study on health consequences of lifestyle, I managed to isolate a sample of 341 adults who had been diagnosed as being allergic to dogs or cats. The reason why this group of people was interesting is that all of them owned pets (dogs or cats) and had been diagnosed as having pet allergies which were severe enough that their doctors had advised them to stop sharing their living quarters with any pets.
Given the emotional bond that people develop with their pets I expected that a good number of these people would not go along with their doctor’s request. The surprise was how few actually did. The proportion of individuals complying with their doctors’ instructions to remove their pets was extremely low. Only 1 out of 5 actually rid themselves of pets. Such a low level of compliance might be explained by the fact that there is a large emotional investment in their current pet. Many of the people who did not follow their doctor’s instructions were probably thinking “Let’s keep Lassie or Fluffy for as long as they live but let’s not get another pet after they are gone in order to control my allergies.”
That kind of expectation underestimates the importance of pets in the lives of people. Once you have owned a dog or a cat that you have bonded with, the idea that they will pass on and you will not have another to keep you company in unthinkable to people. This was confirmed in my data when I looked at a subset of individuals for whom the diagnosis of a pet allergy had been made sufficiently long ago that the animal, they were living with at the time had, by now, died. In this group, despite allergies and the advice of their physician, an amazing 70.5% (more than two out of every three patients) had actually replaced the deceased animal with a new dog or cat. The emotional gain from the companionship associated with living with a pet is clearly sufficient to offset even continuing physical discomfort caused by chronic allergic reactions.
This book explores the human-animal bond in different ways. Cal Orey describes her own experiences with the companionship of dogs and cats in a heartwarming manner. In addition, she provides some interactive questionnaires and other information which allow the reader to explore their own attraction toward dogs and cats. Soulmates with Paws is a must-read for all animal lovers.

INTRODUCTION
ANIMAL ATTRACTION THEN AND NOW
BY CAL OREY
Enjoy the amazing healing powers of pets—their ability to help us relax, fight disease, stave off loneliness, comfort the sick and elderly, help us stay active, boost longevity—and be a gift—especially during a pandemic. And as we turn the corner and move into a sense of normalcy.
The human-animal bond is more popular than ever. Sure, we all know about pet-assisted therapy programs which welcome dogs, cats, and other small animals into hospitals, nursing homes, and other institutions. As a lover of animal bond films, from Old Yeller showing the bond of a boy and dog to Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, a story of an intense bond a dog and his adult master, I savor the connection to both dogs and cats on the little screen, big screen and in real life. But when the pandemic hit, neighbors, people who now work from home, and maybe even you got a dog or cat to help you get through tough times.
As we’re starting to get a sense of normal in America (but are witnessing challenges in India, Brazil, and Canada) it is still unsettling times. Because COVID-19 cases are less than more in the U.S., countless people of all ages are now coping with mental challenges. I’m talking about stress, anxiety, and depression. And our furry friends come to the rescue! Not only do they help us adapt because they are a constant, the do so much more.
If you or someone you know experiences PTSD after getting COVID-19, are a long-hauler, taking care of a survivor or lost a loved one, you must know you were in an abnormal situation. But now we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s time to once again tune into your animal friends—and be prepared for new signs of Earth changes.
So, if you’ve gone this far through life’s journeys, you, like me, may feel more connected to creatures, big and small. I have confirmed in this book what I knew for decades—pet love is priceless. Soulmates with Paws is a tribute to all the four-leggers in my life—and since 2020 when the unforgettable epidemic began to erupt into a pandemic and during climate change.
Remember, the human-companion animal bond is universal and one that connects us as whole unity on the planet.
