Description

The death of a beloved pet is an emotional loss that is impossible to understand until the actual experience. Brighton's Rainbow Bridge story comforts those in pet grief with genuine compassion for this heartbreaking loss and faith in after-life Spirit with forever love.
Brighton Mourning was a children’s chapter book about Brighton’s life. He was truly a “Good Boy” and shares his B-Right-On wisdom with kids through his pawprint rhymes. In Brighton Mourning, we sadly join Brighton in the peaceful end of his journey to the Rainbow Bridge. Yet Angel Brighton’s inspirational story does not end with death, but shines a bright light on the continuing circuit of an afterlife legacy of Hope, Faith and Love. This transparent end-of-life journey honors the profound grief experience of pet loss, while providing belief in the message of forever love. The author reflects the truth that “When you get a dog, you sign up for a broken heart, but it’s worth it.” It is a touching story about death within the comforting perspective of forever Spirit in the afterlife.

Dedication

This book is dedicated to my husband, Floyd Stone, lovingly referred to as Pops. We were blessed to have Brighton join our lives as my fulfilled dream of an exquisite English Crème Golden Retriever from the Netherlands. Brighton was equally fond of Doc and Pops. Brighton gracefully gained angel wings in crossing the rainbow bridge, embraced within our forever love. Little did Pops know that Brighton was truly his forever angel and would be waiting all too soon on the other side of the rainbow bridge to be reunited and embraced with forever golden angel love. This heartfelt story is a tribute to both my forever angels who watch over my shoulder as evidence to believe in everlasting life and love.
Acknowledgments

This book is a personal journey through end of life and afterlife. It is meant to convey the message of everyday angels that support us with the grace as we integrate the profound mystery of death. Plus, there are clues of synchronicity that are experienced through others, and they enhance the belief that the spirit remains with us in afterlife.
Throughout the book, I share the gentle support and love from our son, James. It is seen in his experiences as a little boy with my many bunnies. This evolved over several decades to the comfort in our loss of Brighton, and the profound sudden passing of his beloved Dad. James’s wife, Michelle, is a family angel who has truly been “in the wings” and ready to support and understand in so many calm, subtle ways.
Special acknowledgement is extended to Ans Schuurman of the Morning Valley Kennel in the Netherlands. She had the faith and trust to honor me with her precious puppy, Brighton, when I was a total stranger who connected with her in 2006 through email from America. Over the course of Brighton’s life, we became friends, and one of the thrills of our life was for Pops and me to visit Ans in 2012 at her exquisite Netherlands location. That same year, we were blessed to have Ans grace us with a second puppy, our Snowdon, from Polar Express of the Morning Valley. Again, after we had lost Brighton, Ans honored our love for the Morning Valley and Brighton’s heritage, and graced us with our Enzo, from Slice of Lemon of the Morning Valley.
Another English Crème Golden Retriever breeder became a personal friend who supported me through the years from the time Brighton first arrived in 2006. Nancy Hagan of Heroes Gold in Elmhurst, Illinois, was there for me through many moments of anxiety as to which puppy I would be receiving from the Netherlands. She shared her veterinary staff expertise related to many health issues and provided seasoned breeder guidance related to many golden retriever behaviors. She held my hand through OFA certifications and the sponsoring of Snowdon for stud services through her Heroes Gold website. She supported me through every moment of Brighton’s passage and was the first angel I contacted in the middle of the night when he passed.
There are no words to fully express the appreciation I have for Burr Ridge Veterinary Clinic. All the staff demonstrated such love for Brighton. Dr. Brian Rooney was Brighton’s hero when, as a seven-month-old pup, Brighton’s ingesting of towel threads led to the need for a lifesaving removal of eighteen inches of intestine. At age six, Brighton again was blessed with the canine cancer expertise of Dr. Jeffrey Palmer, who surgically removed a mast cell tumor with safe margins that did not need further treatment and gave Brighton a full life to the age of thirteen. It was Dr. Palmer who also showed such understanding and compassion toward me as I struggled with the end-of-life decisions that resulted from Brighton’s spleen tumor diagnosis that is covered in this book. I have the greatest admiration for all veterinarians, and that also includes Dr. Jacqueline Vernot, animal eye specialist, and Dr. Steven Abel, surgeon, from VCA Aurora Animal Hospital. Likewise, what is truly remarkable is the canine cancer vaccine research of Dr. Mark J. Mamula, of Yale School of Medicine.
When Brighton was in the waning months of his life, another angel appeared to guide us through the phase of hospice and readiness for passage. Dr. Melissa Trupia provided heroic support through her in-depth at-home end-of-life assessment, plus counseling as to the steps to expect in the gradual tumor growth and eventual time of passage. Dr. Melissa has the exceptional gift of being able to provide at-home acupuncture, and her frequent visits were a grace for Brighton, as well as for Pops, Snowdon, and me. She coached me in emergency readiness, plus prescribed and trained me in the use of a syringe with a tranquilizer and pain relief that became a blessing at the end of Brighton’s life. Dr. Melissa’s at-home practice specializes in hospice care and euthanasia when the time is right. I can’t say enough about how such at-home care and euthanasia contributes to the reverence for our fur angels and their dignity in end-of-life care. That level of deep respect is also extended to the professional manner displayed by the Hinsdale Pet Cemetery in honoring final arrangements.
I have profound appreciation for the personal friends who have also lost their fur angels and supported me through their own end-of-life experiences, which are shared in the book through the legacy of their angel dogs: Dr. Angie Bartolomei-Balodimas (Aries, Rocco), Dr. Steve and Sandy Ruby (Benson, Princess, Katie), Ruth Green (Daytona, Jackson), Mamie Kiyohara (Clumber Spaniel), Darlene Salerno (Max), and Bob Wimmi (Shilo). Dog-lover friends from my school district knew Brighton, and we shared love and compassion as we experienced mutual grief in the loss of our fur angels: Pam Dlhy (Hershey), Sandy Morgan (Emma, Abby), and Mary Beth Niziol (Missy, Louise).
Finally, this story of fur angel love and loss could not be complete without the meaningful friendships on Facebook through multiple dog-related groups for golden retrievers and breeders, canine cancer, and pet loss: Laurianne Bagarre (Owen); Julianne Corbin, PhD (Cecelia, Bridgit); Tony Corrigan (Paddy); Robin Falco (Emily Snow, Noah); Debbie Franklin (Theo); Sharon Griggs (Max); Kathleen Herman (Kayleigh); Alice Rocque-Angemeier (Cobe, Callie Rose); Sarah Van Drunen (Chief); and Basia Wilder (Harley).
My sincere thanks to Tricia Montgomery, founder of K9-Fit Club, who knew Brighton and continues to support me in all my dog endeavors. Russell Helms also provided extensive editing and input in the initial manuscript. Lt. Col. Ned Matich (retired) gave me valuable technical assistance in connection with the images used in the book, and thanks to Brent Ohlmann for intellectual property advice.
The staff at Balboa Press has provided excellent support in all phases of the publishing of the book. I feel honored to have the book published by Balboa as a division of Hay House Publishing Company and the inspirational legacy of Louise Hay.
No book on pet loss would be complete without acknowledging all the published authors who have written books about pet loss and the afterlife, including recognized pet communicators. I have provided a list of the resources that I reviewed in helping me to cope with my personal loss, as well as to increase my own depth of integration of the gift of pet communication. The death of pets leads to greater grief and anguish than many realize, and pet death is very difficult fo
