“Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person's ultimate good as far as it can be obtained.”

CHAPTER 1

Sarah
Every eye in the room had turned to look at me. I felt their stares burning into my skin, but I avoided looking at anything and anyone. My eyes were fixed to the floor. I felt my cheeks burning with heat as I tried to process what was happening.
Rob was still down on his knee. I could feel his gaze on my face. It was the strongest in the room as he waited for me to answer him. I didn’t know what to say. This was not the time or the place to propose to a girl. It was his father’s wake.
“Sarah?” Rob said softly. His eyes had lost their confidence. I could tell that the wait was killing him. I felt guilty, but I knew I couldn’t say yes or no without properly thinking it through.
“I think I need a minute,” I said, as I took my gaze away from him and turned around so that I could make a clean line for the door. I heard people muttering underneath their breath, as I walked away and left Rob kneeling on the floor. I wasn’t prepared to listen to what they were saying. I didn’t even really care. This wasn’t about them; this was about me.
I stepped out of the room into the white marble hallway that felt much cooler on my skin. I knew that Rob would probably try to follow me, so I didn’t stop as I headed towards the back of the house. Rob had mentioned to me in passing that his mother had planted a beautiful garden before she had passed away and it seemed like the perfect place for me to hide until I could think straight.
I found the back door to the house and pushed it open with relief. The cool breeze hit my skin and brought goose bumps to the surface, but I didn’t mind. It felt good to feel the cold. It felt good to feel something other than crippling confusion. I walked out further into the garden and found my senses being carried away by the delicious smell of tropical flowers.
I couldn’t see well in the dark, but I could tell from the smell alone that the garden was every bit as beautiful as Rob had said it was.
