N ot long ago, while entering the University s main library my eyes caught a caption on one of the books at the publication shelf with the inscription literature - A gateway to a fulfilled human existence . I sought after this gateway and well, this is the outcome.
I am wishing you, the reader, lots of excitement and deep refreshment as you pore over this novel.
Meanwhile in the novel...
... Maybe we were meant for each other, So Life isn t a battle to be fought or a Contest to be won but rather a pack of shadows and challenges which gives us only two choices- To either Live through them or let them live through us.

Part I

I n the beginning
July 2002
I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing by the seashore and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me. - Sir Isaac Newton.
CHAPTER ONE

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you... How old are you now? How old are you now? How old are you now? How old are you now? ... I am plus one today, I am plus one today, I am plus one today, I am plus one today Favour replied as everyone who had trooped into their one bedroom flat at No. 42 Mission Road to celebrate his birthday cheered on. July 8 th was always the best of days for him and today wasn t different either. He was celebrating his ninth year birthday and friends and well wishers about their neighbourhood had filled their tiny apartment which normally housed just his happy Family.
Mr. Godwin Samuel, Favour s dad, a civil servant in his late 40 s, a no-nonsense man, he wasn t well to do but always saw the needs of his family as ultimate, Mrs. Mercy Samuel, a community health worker and Mr. Samuel s amiable wife, the one who had made sure to raise her children in the way of the lord was vibrant as expected making sure everyone felt at home, Elder sisters Blessing and Margaret had taken care of the distribution of food and drinks, Elder brother John, Favour s partner in crime was on a one week leave from school, right in time for the birthday, Joy, the last baby of the house, who had made the sweets containers dad bought for the birthday her playground, and every other person present were in celebration mood as He blew out the candles marking his ninth birthday. He was yet to write the primary six (6) placement examination which was normal for every government primary school at the time. His birthday this year, had coincidentally clashed with his graduation which meant double celebration , His mum and dad had collaborated to provide the birthday cake, Elder sister Margaret whom He was always at loggerheads had prepared the rice and had dished a mount Everest ish quantity and served herself privately a typical of herself he shrugged.
Little children had trooped in from far and near, those he knew and those he hadn t come across before were all present. Walking about like the biblical King who hosted a party and saw a man not dressed properly, he willed for the power to send them off just as the king did. Amidst the children play and run around going on. He spotted her, right there at a corner seated with so much composure was a long-haired typical brunette, dressed in a blue gown that gave her an impressing look, she had a small pink lip, she looked quite older than him, but age is just a number he thought as he approached her with the elegance of an Eagle Hi, I am Favour, I m the celebrant hope you don t mind telling me your name He had said, picking his words carefully she kept quiet, smacked a little and just kept staring at him as if He was an over-dressed monster. Stupefied by her beauty, kept staring at her not knowing if she had answered him or not until He was reinstated to reality by the uproar of laughter behind him. His friends who had been watching him all along and couldn t bear how she had ignored and made him look stupid had broken loose with laughter.
Teye Balogun, the son of Mr. Balogun their closest neighbour had championed the outburst, they were friends, in the same class as well and was quite brilliant although no matter how hard he tried, always trailed behind Favour. They normally had issues with each other but would always reconcile before they even knew they had. Today s case was different he has clearly bitten more than he can chew, adding salt to my injury, making me look even more stupid before her and clearly jeopardizing every stand I may have gotten. Favour thought as he shot a death stare at him and walked away.
His siblings and the other children had finished singing the happy birthday song and were all cheering to his new age. Food and drinks were now served and the look on everybody s face could be read clearly as positive, it was really a happy day. He had gotten over his little encounter pretty quickly than he thought and was in celebration mood like other children. They had eaten and drunk until evening and the weather was becoming a contrast of what it was earlier on. It was 6:00pm in the evening when a calm hostile breeze was began to blow through the peaceful city, the cloud had lost its blue savouring sensation and was darkening gradually, roadside traders were beginning to roll down tarpaulin sheets to protect their wares from getting soaked, after about 10 minutes, rain begin to pour down gently, They were no thunderstorms or lightening rumble, just peaceful steady drizzle; a typical description of the July rain .
The children had arrived at his house few minutes past 3:00pm and had stayed enjoying themselves until now. by now, Favors Mum being her usual self the no staying out until 6:00pm activist had hurried them off to their houses sharing a ruler and pencil as souvenir to each of them in appreciation for their en masse turnout. By 8:00pm the rain was drizzling gently threatening to stop almost immediately, the mood in the house was back to normal. The Nuclear community had settled for dinner, a sumptuous meal of Eba and Benneseed soup, Sister Blessing had once again displayed her cooking prowess which was second to none in the house. Mum, Dad and other members of the family had taken turns to rain prayers and birthday blessings on him wishing him Good Health and Length of days. After the meal, dad handed a brown envelope that he had received from the post office a day before it had stamps all over it meaning it was official, Favour had dropped it carefully under his pillow to be read another day not willing to let any news spoil his special day.
Taking the last bottle of mineral left in the crate, He corked it open, strolled outside to the front of their house. He began to sip it gently as He had watched people do with champagne bottles on T.V. He stood barefoot on the sleekly cemented veranda floor letting the cold sensation run through him mildly Stared blankly at the dark cloud and began reminiscing the day s event not being able to take his thoughts away from her, she had incautiously beclouded his tender mind. Recapping the last lesson there were taught in C.R.K, wished that as the biblical star had led the three wise men to Jesus, that his own star appears as well and lead him to where she was.
CHAPTER TWO

T he morning sun is both a symbol of revival and a reminder of the past. It signals the dawn of a new day, a new vitality, a new experience, yet it reminds us that our predecessors have also witnessed their own morning sun, and that we are recipients of their innovations and experience Favour thought in his sleep as the tiny rays of light were penetrating his eyes from the window lines.
