It was only a tiny speck floating among the hundreds of billions of galaxies. Treplia was a beautiful, bustling space city. It emanated a colorful glow of lights resembling a gemstone with a ring of hangar bays and business establishments circling around it.
The war against the aliens was finally over, leaving areas damaged and in ruin. But their resilience to recover was prevailing among all of the destruction as they continued to rebuild the outpost settlement of Treplia City.
Many warrior starships, the size of commercial airliners, were returning from faraway places, while Treplia began to relax and to celebrate. Some ships were in bad shape and, upon their, arrival told their tales.
It was at this time a large warrior starship was limping back but coming in fast to the space city and a bit out of control. They tried their best to aim for an open hangar bay. Emergency teams were alerted. The ship passed through the large door and bounced hard, careening off the starboard bulkhead into a horizontal spin at the same time the hangar door began closing and then smashing into the far wall and creating explosions. As the large hangar bay door closed, fires broke out while fires erupted from within the ship with more explosions. Emergency crews and medical teams scrambled to respond. Meanwhile, survivors appeared from out of the wreckage, salvaging some of their cargo and whisking it away as inconspicuously as they could and then vanished. The wounded and dead were rushed away by medical personnel. Fires were still being put out.
Captain Jake, the supervisor of the operations office, came running out to the wreckage. “Look at this mess!” he said. “It’ll take weeks to clean this all up. Look at my shiny floors. Looks like a barbecue got outta hand.”
Fires were strewn all over throughout the hangar.
The ground crew and maintenance workers were starting to rummage through the crumpled debris of metal, parts, and burnt wreckage. The cockpit was smashed in; so was much of one side of the ship. The workers stumbled over parts with a big clatter, tossing things for a better look. The huge hangar echoed with the rattling and clatter.
“Hey! I’ve got something over here!” Thomas yelled. He had long hair in a ponytail, along with the long beard braided down the front of his belly. Thomas was a captain.
Jake came running over. “What do you see?” Jake scanned the mangled shambles. “I don’t see anything”
“Yeah, it all blends together,” Thomas said. “I wouldn’t have noticed, but something here caught my eye that doesn’t fit—three links of chain on a shackle; it doesn’t belong here.”
“I don’t see it. It all blends together in a crunch.”
“The three links of chain on the shackle is on a hand,” Thomas said as he reached it. “It’s all tangled in the debris and covered up.”
“Well, look at that!” Jake said. “I’m as surprised as a stomped-on frog with its eyes bulged out in the summertime. If it were a snake, it would have bit me for certain. It looks like one of those old android warriors!” Jake was also a captain.
“He’s gotta be under all this.” Thomas looked around as others busied themselves.
“Pilots are dead,” a worker muttered as he walked past, stumbling over loose metal with a lot of rattle and clatter, along with what sounded like the clang of a pipe on the hard floor.
“Be careful there!” Thomas hollered. Then he turned to Jake. “Let’s dig it out—see what we got, like a fossil dig!”
“Keep an eye out for strange alien creatures!” Jake said. “You never know what you’ll pick up—a wild animal, a green deformed frog, worms that burrow under your skin, a virus, spiders. Or maybe, it’ll be a beast with big, sharp teeth.” Then he smiled.
They pulled the android out dressed. It wore a dark blue, dilapidated cloak with gold trim that was torn in places. They soon discovered the machine wasn’t working at all. It was dented and had oil stains. Its left hand displayed the shackle and three links of chain dangling from it. It had a damaged left knee, which apparently had been blown open, with pieces dangling by wire like wind chimes. The android was filthy, as if it had been in many battles. Its hooded cloak was frayed with tears and holes, revealing its old age and evidence of neglect.
“He’s a big guy,” Thomas said. “Welcome aboard!”
They tossed him onto a cart with a great effort, although both men had large frames. The robot landed hard with a loud thud like metal rattling and resembled unwanted trash.
“This android looks like he’s been through lots of combat and no vacation with all his damage,” Jake mumbled. “I believe he’s ready for the garbage pile.”
“Hold your horses! We’ll check him out. Try to find all his parts and components. Every last thing—we can’t forget anything. These android warriors are few and far between, very few. They’re becoming antiques—not many around anymore. Parts are rare.”
“All right! You take him,” Jake said. “Keep me posted if you get him running again.”
“Hmmm. Something’s fishy—very fishy,” Thomas said. “This is a warrior ship, but only civilians were on board. We may have pirate renegades among us. Splotchers! Those rejected hoodlum warriors!”
Then Thomas looked around, threw a tarp over the android, and took him away for assessing possible repairs. “Don’t worry buddy. We’ll try to get you working again. “Thomas mumbled. “A warrior ship with only civilians aboard?”
The robot’s name was originally “Franz,’’ and he was one of the android warriors programmed for combat. Franz was also damaged years ago in the war. A hermit named Turquoise found the robot in pieces after a battle, buried on a snowy mountaintop
