CHAPTER 1
CHARISMA - BUSINESS FIRST
Today, March 11, 2002, was the open house for Denise’s Safe Place . I opened it in honor of my late mother, Denise Tony. The center was for young adults dealing with domestic violence and sexual abuse. I was excited, the grant and donations from the community had finally came through and the Mayor and friends helped make my dream come true.
Once I found a location; I made calls, placed ads in several different newspapers and spoke with furniture companies and other businesses on donating furniture, bedding, dressers, desks, and other items for the center. I called the telephone and cable companies to set up services and interviewed people for positions at the center. I hired two therapists, three counselors, four house techs, a house manager, and an administrative assistant. I also hired a registered nurse and residential assistant to be on site daily.
After all the administrative planning, it was time to get the ball rolling and have an open house. I was dead ass tired from making calls, planning, decorating, renovating, and doing paperwork.
Tired and all, I was still excited. Peaches, LaChae and Tricia were all right by my side. I had a caterer prepare all the food and refreshments for the open house. The house was decorated both inside and out. Everyone that needed to be there was there. The Mayor surprised me with her presence, and offered to help with a summer program and provide daycare vouchers for the participants with children.
The center provides daily coping and life skills for the participants, has a GED program and computer training classes. We offer therapy, anger management, conflict resolution sessions and additional assistance for the participants.
At the open house, I met parents and guardians of some of the young adults who had been picked to participate in the center programs and live at Denise’s Safe Place. This was indeed a special time for me. The center was designed for the participants to stay from six months to two years at a time. Provisions could be made for clients to stay longer if deemed necessary by their social worker or therapist. I felt confident about my new endeavor and where I was going professionally in my career.
After the open house, the ladies, a few of the staff and I went out for drinks at a nearby sports bar. The ambiance in the bar was just what the doctor ordered. I ordered a Tequila Sunrise and the ladies ordered drinks as well. We all sat at the bar and talked about the open house and a path forward. After a few drinks, I excused myself to go to the bathroom. While walking towards the bathroom, I felt like someone was staring at me. When I turned around to see who it was, I thought I saw someone from my past; I blinked and rubbed my eyes, but when I opened them the person was gone. I looked around the bar but could not find that person anywhere. I continued towards the bathroom, when I returned to the table Peaches asked me, “Is everything okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost!”
“I pray that who I think I saw isn’t really who I saw, and that my eyes were just playing tricks on me!” I responded.
“Well, who do you think you saw?” asked LaChae.
“Doesn’t matter, I may have had one too many tequilas and my vision is just a little blurry,” I said.
“Okay, if you say so!” said Peaches. “We can talk about it later, let’s pay this bill and get out of here. I have to work tomorrow; I have an early morning meeting with a new client.”
“Cool, yeah the center’s first day is tomorrow, and I need to prepare for tomorrow as well. The open house was a success. Now the hard work begins,” I explained.
“This has been your dream and vision for years, Sis, you got this!” said LaChae.
Tricia joined in the conversation and said, “Yeah, Charisma, you got this; besides, we got your back. We’re all in this together big sister, we’re all in this together!!”
It felt good hearing the ladies speak highly of me, but deep down I felt scared to partake in this new endeavor. Yes, this has been my vision for some time, but to finally be able to work and build on my dream and vision was something different.
I paid the bill and we all walked towards the door to leave the bar. As I was leaving, I looked back and there he was. He was sitting at a table near the back of the bar with another gentleman. I froze in my tracks and fell to the floor.
When I opened my eyes, Peaches and Tricia were holding my hands and LaChae was wiping my head with a wet towel. The ambulance had been called and a paramedic was taking my blood pressure.
“Not sure what happened Ma’am, but your blood pressure is extremely high, and we would like to take you to the hospital for observation and maybe some medicine to lower it,” said the paramedic.
“High blood pressure, how high?” I responded.
“Ma’am your pressure is 168/101, that is high. Are you currently taking high blood pressure medication? Has your pressure been this high before?” the paramedic asked.
“No, I’m not taking medication for high blood pressure. Today has been a hectic and busy day. My pressure is probably high due to the day I’ve had and there’s no need for me to go to the hospital. Besides, I had a few drinks celebrating today and I may have had one too many. Thanks for your concern but I will follow-up with my doctor in the morning,” I said.
“Ma’am not only is your blood pressure high, but you also fainted and
