#1

Parenting is one of the most difficult and stressful activities on the planet, and yet it is also one of the most important, as it impacts the heart and soul of the next generation and their experience of meaning and connection.

#2

As parents, we are tasked with the difficult and challenging job of raising children. We take on this task without a salary, often unexpectedly, at a young and inexperienced age, or under conditions of economic strain and insecurity.

#3

If we are constantly pressed for time, we may be out of touch with the richness of the present moment. We may be assuming that what we do is okay as long as we have love for our children and desire for their well-being.

#4

The challenges and calling of parenthood can lead to the breaking down of barriers in our own minds and hearts, which can lead to sadness, missed opportunities, hurt, resentment, blame, and ultimately isolation and alienation on all sides.

#5

There are, however, many parents who see parenting as a sacred trust, and they find creative ways to guide and nurture their children, often in the face of great obstacles and odds.

#6

We always have the option of bringing greater attention and intentionality to our lives, especially where it concerns our children. mindfulness can help us do this.

#7

Mindfulness is the ability to be aware of your surroundings, and it can help you become more aware of your children and your own parenting. As you care for your children and try to understand who they are, they will provide you with endless moments of wonder and bliss, as well as opportunities for the deepest feelings of connectedness and love.

#8

Mindfulness is the awareness that arises from paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, nonjudgmentally. It is cultivated by gently reminding ourselves to pay attention in that way over and over again.

#9

Mindful parenting involves keeping in mind what is important as you go about the activities of daily living with your children. It is a form of meditation that helps you see past the endemic turmoil and cloudiness of your own mind, and cultivate greater clarity and calmness.

#10

Mindful parenting is a process of deepening and refining our awareness and our ability to be present and act wisely. It is not an attempt to attain a fixed goal or outcome, but rather a continual process of seeing ourselves with some degree of kindness and compassion.

#11

parenting is a reflection of our love for our children. It is expressed in the quality of the moment-to-moment relationships we have with them. It is expressed in how we pass the bread, and not just in the big trip to Disney World.

#12

Mindful parenting is about the possibility of seeing your children with greater clarity and listening to and trusting your own hearts. It gives form and support to the daily challenges of parenting, and it can help you find ways to act with greater wisdom and be sources of unconditional love for your children.

#13

Mindful parenting takes energy and commitment, just like any deep spiritual practice or consciousness discipline. We may wonder from time to time whether we are capable of taking on such a task, but we must remember that it is the work of a lifetime.

#14

Parents are already highly disciplined and attentive. They have to be in order to raise children, and they have to pay attention to their children’s complex schedules and their own. They are also highly accomplished, and can make excellent use of these skills in their efforts to parent more mindfully.

#15

The same can be said about parenting. We are not telling you what to do, or what choices you need to make. Only you can determine what your specific situation calls for in any given moment.

#16

Mindfulness is universal in scope and can be applied to practically all circumstances. It is a way of listening to what is important in life and expanding our vision of what that might be in any situation.
