Esta jornada empezó hace muchos años, por mero accidente.
En 1987 inicié un trabajo como reportero de un periódico en Washington, DC. Para mi sorpresa, las obligaciones incluían una tarea extra y desconocida: tomar fotos.
En ese entonces mi “experiencia fotográfica” se limitaba a los breves cursos de fotografía que tomé como parte de mis estudios de periodismo en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Escuela Nacional de Estudios Profesionales Aragón, en la Ciudad de México.
Pocos son mis recuerdos de las clases de laboratorio, salvo que en algunas ocasiones los maestros nos daban instrucciones para tomar algunas fotos en las prácticas de campo que hacíamos en los jardines de la misma universidad. Los instructores metían y sacaban los rollos en esas prácticas grupales, marcando cuidadosamente el número de vistas con un respectivo nombre para saber qué tomas pertenecían a cada estudiante. Las prácticas se hacían con una sola cámara y hasta donde recuerdo ningún estudiante de mi clase tenía cámara propia; porque eran costosas, pero sobre todo porque queríamos ser periodistas, escritores, no fotógrafos.
Sin embargo, recuerdo a un maestro genial, Salvador Mendiola, poeta de vastos conocimientos en muchas disciplinas. A través de la literatura y la poesía nos enseñó a entender la fotografía. Eran clases magistrales. Nadie tenía cámara, repito, pero muchos alumnos grababan sus clases en casetes, y estas se abarrotaban con estudiantes de otras carreras.
Hortensia Moreno, escritora, y Andrés de Luna, crítico de arte, fueron otros dos excepcionales maestros que con sus clases de cine nos ampliaron el entendimiento de la fotografía.
