Sample Book Insights:
#1 The American people are deeply divided about one thing: the belief that Washington is rife with government corruption. The concern over widespread corruption is growing.
#2 The new form of corruption in Washington involves large sums of money that are being funneled to the families and friends of politicians who are making influential decisions that affect everything from national security to our standard of living.
#3 Offshore corruption is when politicians move the location of the deal, the entities, and the players involved, abroad. This allows them to avoid public scrutiny and accountability for the selling of influence.
#4 Proxy corruption is when a person or entity provides something of value to a politician in exchange for something else, usually access to the politician’s power. This is the most common form of corruption, and it is dangerous because it makes politicians susceptible to overseas financial pressure.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The American people are deeply divided about one thing: the belief that Washington is rife with government corruption. The concern over widespread corruption is growing.

#2

The new form of corruption in Washington involves large sums of money that are being funneled to the families and friends of politicians who are making influential decisions that affect everything from national security to our standard of living.

#3

Offshore corruption is when politicians move the location of the deal, the entities, and the players involved, abroad. This allows them to avoid public scrutiny and accountability for the selling of influence.

#4

Proxy corruption is when a person or entity provides something of value to a politician in exchange for something else, usually access to the politician’s power. This is the most common form of corruption, and it is dangerous because it makes politicians susceptible to overseas financial pressure.

#5

The family has always been an effective gateway to curry favor with the powerful. In Europe, Africa, and Asia, high-ranking political figures and oligarchs have used marriage and family as a means of gaining political standing and influence.

#6

The American media has run countless stories on the Chinese Princelings, but the American Princelings are the sons, daughters, siblings, and closest friends of America’s most powerful political figures who have accrued financial benefits because of the political power that their parents, family, or friends wield.

#7

Many of America’s political elite are willing to oblige foreign governments and oligarchs in exchange for personal financial relationships. And many of those elites appear to be quite happy about it.

#8

As American companies have become global economic players, they have lost much of their American identity and loyalty. Political elites in America are becoming more sympathetic to the commercial needs of foreign governments and companies, which blurs the line between private and public interests.

#9

Globalization has led to a more commercialized world, but it has also exposed and accelerated corruption.

#10

Cronyism can take many forms, from corporate welfare to government bailouts, and it can be extremely destructive because it not only manipulates the economy, but also generates wealth for the close friends of politicians by first destroying someone else's wealth.

#11

While traditional forms of corruption still occur, many politicians use proxies to cloak their transactions. This makes it extremely difficult to fight political corruption, as it is often hidden in financial dealings.

#12

Corruption is upstream from governing, and it pollutes policies even as they are fashioned. It is better to be feared than loved as a leader, but you do not want to be hated.
