PREFACE
About This Book
Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimate of 14 percent (34.3 million) of U.S. adults are currently cigarette smokers, 75 percent of whom smoke every day. While tobacco use by adolescents has declined substantially in the last 40 years, nearly 4.7 million middle- and high-school students were tobacco users in 2015. In fact, according to statistics from the Office of the Surgeon General (OSG), using the past 30-days review, e-cigarette use grew dramatically among middle school (grades 6 to 8) and high school (grades 9 to 12) students, between 2011 and 2018. E-cigarettes have been the most commonly used tobacco products by youth in the United States since 2014. Dual-use of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes by the same person, or usage of either one, is common among youth and young adults (ages 18 to 24).
Tobacco and E-cigarettes Information for Teens, Fourth Edition offers updated information about the health consequences associated with smoking and other forms of tobacco use. It explains how teen curiosity can lead to the use of e-cigarettes and its related problems. The various methods by which nicotine is consumed, including different types of cigarettes, cigars, hookah pipes, smokeless products, and secondhand smoke, are explained. Cancers associated with the use of tobacco are described in detail with an emphasis on the organs most commonly affected by them. A section on other health concerns related to tobacco use discusses some of the most common smoking-related diseases, including those that impact the heart, lungs, digestive system, eyes, and pregnancy and reproduction. A section on e-cigarettes and their vaping methods for teens is included. For teens who want to stop smoking—or to help a friend or family member quit—facts about ways to prepare and quit smoking, tools and products to help, and nicotine replacement therapy are included, along with tips for dealing with the effects of nicotine withdrawal. The book concludes with directories of resources for more information about the health effects of tobacco use and smoking cessation.
