Preface
About This Book
Substance abuse by teens is turning out to be a public-health issue as it has an impact on their health and well-being. Young people who continuously abuse substances experience various problems, such as academic difficulties, health-related problems (including mental health), poor peer relationships, and involvement with the juvenile justice system. Adolescence substance use not only affects them personally, but there are consequences for family members, the community, and the entire society too. Most teenagers do not really plan to use drugs, however, they are more likely to experiment on the spur of the moment, particularly when influenced by others such as friends. On the bright side, according to the latest results from the Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey of substance use behaviors and related attitudes among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in the United States, the percentage of adolescents reporting substance use decreased significantly in 2021, including those most commonly used substances such as alcohol, marijuana, and vaped nicotine.
Substance Use and Abuse Information for Teens, Sixth Edition provides overall information on substance abuse among teenagers such as alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and illegal drugs. It explains the science behind addiction, the hazards of peer pressure in decision making, and why teenagers use tobacco and alcohol that over time results in binge drinking, nicotine addiction, and suicidal risks. It also includes details on the abuse of legally available substances such as sports supplements, prescription medications, inhalants, anabolic steroids, and illegal substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine, opiates, and hallucinogens. The book concludes with the treatment and recovery strategies and a directory of national organizations that provide drug-related information and a directory of places providing support services.
