Hospital Benchmark was founded in 2005 with the aim of supporting the competitiveness of hospitals through streamlining organizational and cost containment. Hospital Benchmark offers the opportunity to compare your performance with more than 100 hospitals in the world on a Web-based platform. The database was created "by hospitals for hospitals" because it is continually fed with information directly by hospital management of various countries worldwide (amongst them Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, France) and then verified by a team of experts. Which variables are taken into account for finding a Benchmark? The comparison group is chosen based on several variables ranging from the location (national, international, region), the type (University Hospital, private hospital, network structure) to the size of the hospital (all hospitals, hospitals of similar size). Depending on the objective you can choose a variable scale from the simple average up to the best 20%. Production is measured in "direct" departments (like wards and operating rooms) and "indirect" (departments where there are no patients, as management and administration). Hospital Benchmark indicates how much staff expressed in terms of FTE is required to achieve the performed production. The efficiency of medical staff is measured through a comparison of production, which takes the inpatient days, day cases, admissions and visits into account. Hospital Benchmark will indicate how many physicians, expressed in terms of FTE, are needed to achieve the own production. How does Hospital Benchmark support Hospital management? Hospital Benchmark supports the hospital management by continuously mapping the optimization potential and identifying guidelines for the resources allocation. It provides a single objective base to deduce priorities in decision-makings. The clear identification of areas for improvement through Hospital Benchmark is also a powerful instrument tocommunicate within the hospital the need for change and supports interventions in the areas to be developed. The first beneficial result of the introduction of benchmarking is the improvement of the data quality through the introduction of managing information by cost center which forms the base for a proper financial management of each company. "Hospital Benchmark represents an effective instrument for achieving the performance of hospitals at the forefront of financial management." Can you make some examples of introducing Hospital Benchmark to hospitals? Since 2007 Hospital Benchmark follows the evolution of organizational/financial and medical personnel efficiency of the hospital chain Antonius Mesos Group Nieuwegein, operating in Holland with three hospital structures, comparing these with a group of over 100 hospitals in Europe. The aim of the project is the identification of improvement potential within the organization of individual wards and the allocation and performance of human resources. In these hospitals, the potential for improvement was identified in inpatient areas of the hospital. These inefficiencies were mostly caused by having undersized wards– in terms of number of beds. Since2008 this hospital chain uses Hospital Benchmark to allocate the budget for the next year to the wards. In addition, the management of these hospitals has decided that departments with a bad performance to find solutions to increase productivity. Based on performance measurement andrecommendation received by Hospital Benchmark, this hospital created a task force to evaluate the possibility of connecting smaller departments to increase organizational efficiency. "This is an example of a chain of hospitals that uses Hospital Benchmark as part of their strategy.
