Methane - 1 Invention and transfer of methane destruction technologies, 1978 – 2003 This note is a technical annex to a general report on Invention and Transfer of Climate Change Mitigation Technologies on a Global Scale: A Study Drawing on Patent Data. The complete report can be downloaded at: The note describes the creation and transfer of methane destruction in the world between 1978 and 2003. These technologies include equipment for anaerobic treatment of sludge, biological treatment of waste water or sewage, anaerobic digestion processes and apparatus aiming at collecting fermentation gases. The first section focuses on the number of inventions and gives descriptive statistics on the main inventor countries. Section 2 deals specifically with the international flows of technologies and investigates which countries are the main exporters and importers of solar technology. Key points • The number of annual inventions in the world has tripled since 1978 and increased by 9% annually since 1997. In 2003, 277 inventions sought legal protection. • During the 1998-2003 period, the main inventor country was Japan by far (52% of total inventions) followed by Germany and the USA (with respectively 10% and 9%). • The main recipient country is also Japan, with 37% of all patents filed between 1998 and 2003, followed by the USA and Germany.
