ABSTRACT
The work performed in the project "Field test for the demonstration of the emplacement
feasibility of clay buffer material as engineered barrier, in crystalline formation" is presented
in three different volumes.
This Volume II describes the characterization and selection of saponite material from the
ore deposit located at the Madrid Terciary Basin.
Three deposits, Villaluenga, Esquivias and Yuncos were considered. The granulometrie,
mineralogicai and chemical analysis were performed at total sample and at the 2 μπι frac
tion. The methodology is similar to the one described in Volume I. In parallel, the adsortion
properties were analyzed. The saponite from the Villaluenga area was selected. This saponi
te, named green clay at part of the study, presents a specific surface of 120-200 m2/g and an
exchange capacity of 70-150 meq/g, with magnesium as main cation of exchange.
The preliminary studies of the hydrothermal alterations indicate that there are no changes
due neither to the temperature effects nor to the potassium chlorine solutions on the saponite
stability. Nevertheless, these data will be completed with a more detailed study.
The Villaluenga green clays and the montmorillonites of Cortijo de Archidona are the na
tural clay materials selected for the field test of the emplacement of the buffer material.
The industrial test was performed by CIEMAT and CEA and is described at Volume III. Field Test for the Demonstration of the Emplacement Feasibility... Volume
ción de 2 μιτι.
men III.
