Introduction
NLP (neuro linguistic programming) has been a popular personal development tool in the workplace for some considerable time now. We experience it on Leadership courses, Management Training, Sales Training, Redundancy Coaching and many other areas of Business Practice. So why is it so popular?
In today’s competitive environment where we have a huge number of brands and products competing in a global marketplace, where there are not enough jobs for everyone and where we are experiencing a financial downturn, it is ever more important that everyone is working to their full capability. There can be no slack, no room for mistakes and we need to be flexible and responsive to change, proactive and creative with new ideas and ways of maximising profit for the company.
It is well documented that happy employees will be productive employees and where employees are customer facing, a happy employee will make customers happy too. Happy employees will also be healthier and have fewer sick days. They will also ensure the atmosphere at work is happy for their colleagues and customers.
What makes people happy? What makes you happy? You will have the opportunity to think about this as you go through this workbook. Here’s how NLP will help you.
Neuro is how you think; what you believe to be true, your values and how you process your world, how you relate to the experiences in it and how you choose to live your life. Do your current beliefs about yourself help you or get in the way of you making progress?
Linguistic is how you communicate, what you say and how you say it. These words are expressions of your thinking, beliefs and values. What you say to yourself, your own inner voice, will also be a part of your communication pattern. Is it working for you or against you at the moment?
Programming is the result of your thinking and language; it is the behaviour, what you do, the patterns you run and whether they bring you what you want or something else. ‘If you always do what you’ve always done you will always get what you’ve always got.’ I’m sure you’ve heard that before but is it true for you at the moment? Do you need other choices?
In this workbook we will explore aspects of all three and explore how by being flexible and having more choices about what we say and do, we can achieve what we want in the workplace................and in other areas of our life.

John Grinder and Richard Bandler developed what they came to call NLP from a combination of Virginia Satir’s Family Therapy, Fritz Perls’ Gestalt Therapy and the work of Milton Erickson in the area of language patterns. What Grinder and Bandler created was the idea of coding excellence by observing how effective people communicated and forming ground rules that would bring these results to anyone who applied them. These ground rules are what we call NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming. Supporting these rules is a set of tools and techniques that will be covered in this book.
NLP continues to develop and evolve based on new ideas and research studies but the essence remains the same. This book incorporates all the latest NLP thinking to bring you what I think you will find most useful in today’s very competitive work environment.
The first part of the book introduces you to the ground rules or pre-suppositions of NLP. I invite you to read them carefully and then dive into the book believing them to be true. You may find some of them a struggle initially so persevere and give yourself time to consider how, if they were true, things might work out differently. Be curious!
Curiosity is a key aspect of NLP. I encourage you to be curious about how you do what you do well, how others do what you have observed that they do well and start to code the structure or key components of excellence for yourself in your own workplace.
But first - let’s take on board some new thinking that will help you.
The Ground Rules
1) If you always do what you’ve always done then you will always get what you’ve always got
How often do we find ourselves repeating the same patterns at work and getting frustrated when we don’t get the result we want?
You can’t change other people’s behaviour however much you may try because we can’t control other people but you can change your own behaviour to get a different response. First though, you need to change what you believe about what you are doing. You have to believe that another way could work better. Be curious about other options. Focus on what end result you want, visualise it. Then consider what your other options could be.
You could also learn from others. How do they do it? You can learn from your colleagues, from competitors, customers, suppliers and your peers working in other industries. Decide what you want, seek out those who have achieved it and find the structure of their excellence. Then use it to get a different result.
Some beliefs limit your choices of behaviour and by revisiting them you increase your options to change your behaviour and get the result you want.
Where did that belief come from in the first place? Maybe it just isn’t appropriate any more. Companies have beliefs too; challenge the beliefs you don’t think are working in today’s economy or marketplace. Be creative by focussing on what you want to achieve and find new ways of achieving it.
A key word in this ground rule is ‘always’. Sometimes your result can be achieved when you ask yourself ‘have I really always done this?’ Be curious about the times when you did something different, how did that work?

2) You Have The Resources To Do Whatever You Want
Yes you really do! Think about what you do well? Since you were a small child you have built up a store of resources or skills. Many of these skills you are probably not even aware of. We often take the things we do well for granted and focus on those things we find difficult. Yet when we focus on what we do well and think about what skills we have that enable us to do it well, we can then apply the skill in a different way in another part of our life.
Example
Rachel plays hockey and is very good at tackling the opposition and getting the ball off them. The skills she needs for this are: perseverance, speed, physical bravery, physical ability with her stick and fitness. She finds it difficult to lose weight because she says she can’t stick to a diet. However, we know she can stick with the ball! When Rachel recognises that she does have the skill she needs and she loses that erroneous limiting belief she finds she can indeed lose weight because she has the skills she needs in her hockey game; she just needs to transfer
