DATE Wednesday,November 3, 2010 SydneyWestAreaHealthServiceSurgeryBookingsHeatherGray,ChiefExecutiveofSydneyWestAreaHealthServices(SWAHS),todayannouncedthatanexternalreviewintoWaitingListManagementatSydneyWesthasbeencompletedandreleasedtostaff.KeyrecommendationscontainedinthereportarethatSWAHStakesactiontomanagewaitinglistsmoreefficientlybyfullycomplyingwithNSWHealth’sStatewideWaitingListmanagementpolicy.ThereportalsorecommendedthatSWAHSinvestigateworkpracticesthatcontributedtononcompliancewithwaitinglistpolicy.“ThisreportisacriticalstepindeliveringrealimprovementsinthewaySydneyWestAreaHealthServicelooksafterpatientswhoareonsurgerywaitinglists,”MsGraysaid.“Priortoreceivingthisreport,SWAHShadalreadyimplementedimprovementstothewayinwhichpatientaccesstosurgeryismanaged.Thereportisconfirmationthatwewererighttoreviewourproceduresandintroducechangeforthebetter.”InthethreemonthsfromJuly1toSeptember30thisyear,hospitalsthroughoutSWAHSprovided6473plannedsurgeryprocedureswith81percentprovidedwithinrecommendedclinicaltimeframes.AsaresultoftheactionstakenSWAHShasprovided23percentmoresurgerythisyearthanlastyear.Thebiggestchangehasseenacentralisedmanagementsystemreplacedbylocalcontrolathospitallevel.Now,individualhospitalsinSWAHSmanageallaspectsoftheirsurgicalservices,includingsurgerywaitinglists.Thatlocalcontrolstartsrightatthebeginningatthepointwhereasurgeonrefersapatienttothehospital.Thepatientisassignedadayfortheirsurgerywithinanagreedtimeframeandlocalmanagementoftheircasecontinuesthroughtothedaytheyarriveathospitalandareadmittedtoabedonthedayofsurgery. 1
“Goodlocalmanagementlikethisisunderpinnedbystrongpartnershipsbetweenhospitalmanagers,surgerystaffandthelocalcliniciansprovidingthecare”,MsGraysaid.“IwanttobesurethatwelookafterourpatientsthrougheverystepoftheirinteractionwithSydneyWestfromthemomenttheyarereferredtooneofourhospitals.Iamconfidenttheimprovementswehavemadewillmakethathappen.”MsGraysaidthatthereportvalidatesoutstandingworkalreadydonebystaffwhohavebeenassistedbyadedicatedfourpersonspecialistteamfromNSWHealth.This‘SurgeryTeam’focusesonwaitinglistmanagementandhasworkedwithlocalAreaHealthServicestafftoreview,refineandimprovemanagementsystemssinceearlyMay2010.TherehasbeenstandardisationofprocessesacrossallhospitalsinSWAHS.LinkshavebeenstrengthenedbetweenallfacilitiesintheAreatoensurepatientscanbeofferedalternatedoctorsandchoiceoffacilitiesincaseswherethereisaclinicalneedforfasteraccesstocare.“Already,improvedpartnershipsbetweenhospitalGeneralManagers,localdoctorsandstaff,havedeliveredmoretimely,surgicalcareforourcommunity,”MsGraysaid.ThereporthasalsomaderecommendationsdesignedtoimproveongoingmonitoringofwaitinglistprocessesinSWAHS.MsGraysaidthatshewillimplementallofthereport’srecommendations,notingthatmosthadalreadybeenactioned.“SWAHShasdeliveredimprovedperformanceinsurgicalwaitingtimebenchmarkssinceearlierintheyear”MsGraysaid.“Iamconfidentwewillproducefurtherimprovements,basedonnewsystemsthatarenowinplace.””Iacknowledgethemanycliniciansandstaffinourhospitalsfortheirassistancewiththisreview”MsGraysaid.“Theirwillingnesstotakeacriticallookatthewaywehavemanagedpatientcareandtheirenthusiasmforanewapproachhavebeencentraltooursuccess.”AfullcopyofthereportisavailableontheSydneyWestAreaHealthServiceInternetathttp://www.swahs.health.nsw.gov.au/services/publicaffairs/publications/SWAHSSurgeryWaitingList AuditReport29102010.pdfSWAHSPublicRelationsonMediaEnquiryLine47341960 ~ ends ~
