Hereyoulearnhowtomakeamosaizedpicturefrompiecesofitsownbitmap.Wewillalsodemonstratehowtocreateamosaicpictureusingadifferentmosaizedlibraryofpictures.
TheMosaizer:howtocreateamosaizedmosaicAbouttheMosaizerTheMosaizerisatoolthatrecreatesapicturefrompiecesofitself.TheMosaizercutsapictureintoanumberofsubpictures,andusesthesetorebuildthatsamepictureagain.The‘chunky’effectthatwillresultiscausedbyaslightlyoffsetofcolormatch,wherenotthecorrectsubpictureisputbackonitsoriginalposition,butonethatalsofitsprettywell.RequirementsTheMosaizerrequiresonlyonesourcepicture.IncaseadifferentpictureisusedforMosaizingandforpicturerecreation,quitesomecolormismatchmayoccur.WeselectedtwosimilarpicturesofWallEthatarealmostthesameincolorpalette.ThestepsforsuccessfulMosaizingStep1:selectthemosaizerpictureandthecellsizeThemosaizerpicturecanbeloadedvia‘File|Openmosaizerpicture’orincaseanewpictureisused:‘File|Newmosaizerpicture”.Theselectedpictureisseeninthetab‘Mosaizer’onthetopright.ThenextstepistochoosethecellsizeoftheMosaizer.Thisisapresetvalue,rangingfrom16to196pxwidthandheight.Weselectacellsizeof60x60px(viatabMosaizer’ontheleft).Whenasizeisselected,thenumberofhorizontalandverticalcutscanberead(notvisibleintheexampleontheright):32x37=1184subpictures.Step2:MosaizethemosaizerpictureSimplypressthe‘Mosaize!’button.Themosaizerpicturewillnowbecutinthegivennumberofsubpicturesandstoredinatemporaryfolder(called‘/Temp’).Theresultingpaletteisnowshown(exampleonnextpage).Dependingonthenumberofpictures,thismaytakeawhile.
Information:thepaletteisbuiltfrom3horizontalbandsofpictures.Eachbandissortedfromlefttorightoverthecolorspectrum,andforcolorsaturationwithinabandinverticaldirection.Thetopbandshowsthelightestcolors,thebottombandthedarkest.Technicalnote:horizontalaxisistheHue,verticalaxistheSaturationandthebandrepresentsarangeofLightnessvalues(HSLcolorsystem).
ThecolorspectrumofWallEsourcepicture(onlythetopbandisshownhere)Step3:selectthesourcepictureAftersuccessfulmosaizing,atemporarypicturelibrarywillbecomeavailable,called‘(Multi)Mosaized’(exampleontheright).ThislibrarystaysactiveaslongastheMosaizerProsessionlasts.Fromherethecreationofthephotomosaicfollowsthenormalpathofanyotherphotomosaic.Justthelibraryisnowdifferent.Torecreatethemosaizerpicturefromthislibrary,loadthesamepictureasthemosaizedone.Thisisdonevia‘File|Opensourcepicture´orifanewfileisused‘File|Newsourcepicture’.Step4:selectthepropercellsizeThisisthemorecreativepartoftheprocess.Ifwestartwiththesmallercellsizeasthemosaizedcell(forinstance40x40)theresultingpicturewillhave51x76cells.Thisnumberdoesnotnecessarilyequaltheoriginalcutnumber(32x37).Information:whentheexactnumberofcellsisselectedasoftheoriginalmosaizedversion(bothnumberandsize),wemayexpectafullrecreationofthesourcefileasifnothinghadhappened.SinceMosaizerrandomlyselectsthebestfitfromacertain‘topX’matches,theresultmaystillbeexiting.Whentheoption’ForceMosaizer’scellsize’ischeckedandthecellsizeisthesameasthemosaizedone,afullrecreationcanbeexpected.Pressthe‘Create’buttonandlookattheresultingpicture(nextpage).Wealsouseadifferentsourcefile(butwiththesameWallEcontent),andtheresultisequallyimpressive.

Optionalstep1a:createoverlappingsubcellsThenumberofcellsiscalculatedbytheprogramwhenthecellsizeisselected.Thisnumberiscalculatedtohaveaminimumoverlapbetweenadjacentcellstoavoiddoublepartsinthetemporarysubpicturelibrary.Youcanchangethisbymovingtheslider(seeexamplebelow):Whenthesliderismoved,overlappingsubpictureswillbegenerated.Apositiveoverlapindicatesthatpiecesofthesubpicturesarereused(left),anegativeoverlapindicatesthatgapswillexistbetweenadjacentsubpicturesaftermosaizing(right).TIP1:varythecellshapefromsquaretorectangularandseewhateffectitwillgiveonthefullpicture(left)TIP2:sincethetemporarylibraryisjustanotherlibrary,tryusingthecircularsandseehowitcreatesacompletelyneweffect(middle)TIP3:usethefiltersandmasksandtheeffectofe.g.them_circlemaskontheresult(right)
